For this Time Based Media Assignment I worked in a pair and we were to produce a 30 second (maximum) video composite on the theme of our choice. Within this video composite we were to demonstrate our skills and techniques using a range of methods such as video production, graphics rendering and audio editing, and apply them to a single composite.

Ollie and I firstly chose to do a promotional video for Digital Media and Digital Media Development. Andrew (tutor) commented that it was a broad subject and would be too much information to fit into a 30 second film. We thought about it and firstly decided to promote a video on one of the modules on the course. The more we thought about it, we finally came up with the idea of a news broadcast on an event that happened in one of the campuses. The story was about a break-in into the Watts computer suite, where lots of expensive equipment was stolen. We had thought about making it a humourous news flash but decided against it and to make it serious, with hints of humour instead. Some of the original footage we did for the promotional video was used but the rest for the news flash had to be re-filmed with a digital camera I brought in.

The whole news flash had the voice over of the news presenter Minoko Ma, who was voiced by me. Therefore we borrowed the sound booth and recorded my voice reading the script. Was lots of fun and I had to NG a fair few times before we had the whole 30 second voice piece we needed. We also had an interview with a witness. This was acted by my cousin and was funny because he only had one line. Hopefully the video production should be all edited by Monday where we will add in the voice over and the music for the broadcast.

University of Brighton News

University of Brighton News

One of the jobs I had to do for this project was to create the news bar on the bottom of the screen where the title of the news story, scrolling text and the news logo would go. On the right shows the different designs I made for the logo. Having conducted a survey to see which one was the best to use, results showed that number 4 & 5 were the best.
Number 1 & 2 resembled sports emblems and therefore people would have thought the programme was related to sports. The pink colour on a blue background was horrible in the eyes of a colour blind person. It seemed to move and looked “funny”. So these were not in the option. The third logo seemed suitable and professional but too simple and the star symbol (university logo) seemed out of place. Somone commented that the symbol seemed out of place on the last logo design as well. This was because the last initial (n for News) was moved slightly away from the letter ‘b’ to make the letters ‘u’ and ‘b’ together with the symbol, representing University of Brighton. The letters were written in white with a bevel effect added on to make the name stand out from the background. The disadvantage of using this logo is if it were to be placed on the top left corner of the screen, it could disappear and not ledgible if a white video was showing behind it.
I think we will use logo design number 4 for our final production because it is bold and represents the university’s colours. The next decision to make is whether to have the logo in the top left corner of the screen or on the bar at the bottom.
